Why Does God Let Bad Things Happen to Good People?

You are currently viewing Why Does God Let Bad Things Happen to Good People?

As human beings, we often ask ourselves why bad things happen to good people. It’s a question that has puzzled us for centuries. We see tragedies, injustices, and hardships that seem unfair and senseless. However, as people of faith, we believe that God is a loving, all-knowing God who is in control of everything. In this article, we’ll explore two points to help answer this difficult question.

We Don’t See from God’s Perspective

One reason why we may not understand why bad things happen to good people is because we don’t see things from God’s perspective. In 1 Corinthians 13:12, it says “For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.” We only see a small part of the picture, while God sees the whole thing. We don’t know all the reasons why certain things happen, but we trust that God does.

Another reason why we suffer is because we have agency. We have the ability to make choices, and sometimes our choices hurt others. In Mosiah 3:19, it says “For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord.” We live in a world where people can choose to do good or evil, and sometimes the consequences of their choices can cause others to suffer. But even in these situations, we can trust that God can turn our suffering into experience and growth.

The Atonement of Jesus Christ Makes Up for All Pain and Suffering

As we see the unfairness of life, we may feel discouraged and wonder if there is any purpose to our suffering. However, we believe that through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, all pain, suffering, and sin can be overcome. In Alma 7:11-13, it says “And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people… And he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities.” The Atonement of Jesus Christ means that we can find comfort in our suffering, knowing that it can be overcome through faith in the Savior.

In conclusion, we may not fully understand why bad things happen to good people, but we can trust in God’s love and wisdom. We can find peace in knowing that through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, all suffering can be overcome. As we exercise faith and trust in God, we can find strength and hope in the midst of difficult times.
